About GuideStar Europe
GuideStar Europe, a project of GuideStar International (GSI) aims to promote transparency and reporting of Not-for-Profit Organisations (NPO) across Europe. GSI believes that the presentation of information on NPOs, is one of the first steps that must be taken to improve transparency in the nonprofit sector. The European project is an integral part of the global development work of GSI.
Ultimately, Guidestar Europe will draw together into a single relational database current and pertinent information about the entire civil society sector in the European Union. This will enhance transparency and accountability, while creating a knowledge infrastructure for the sector and its stakeholders across Europe.
The current plan which has been developed to achieve this is based on the “GuideStar Europe: A trans-national information system for European civil society” feasibility project (C046231) which was supported by the European Commission and other donors. You can read the final report of market validation project for the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary and Ireland.
The next phase of the GuideStar Europe project will include both a roll-out of the GuideStar model to more countries and the launch of a pan-European search capability.
Fundraising efforts are being pursued to aid the development of a GuideStar Europe Portal. This will be a comprehensive, trans-European database founded on a common technical standard, which will facilitate reporting of NPOs and encourage harmonised transparency standards throughout European civil society.
GSI also supports the establishment of national initiatives that share the values and principles of GuideStar Europe and encourages such country programmes to become part of the GuideStar Europe network.
